The American Lung Association of California Research Program funds basic research. Award categories are based on a “career ladder” approach that parallels the stages of a developing career in academic medicine. The primary focus of funding includes but is not limited to:
- Health effects of air pollution
- Asthma
- Tobacco-related lung disease
- Tuberculosis

The American Lung Association of California and the national American Lung Association have affiliated but separate funding programs. The national American Lung Association offers awards in all categories listed above (except the Pulmonary Nurse Scholarship) as well as additional award categories. Please note that eligibility requirements and award amounts differ between the two programs. Learn more about the national research program.
Award amounts granted through the American Lung Association of California Research Program are higher than those for equivalent categories in the national American Lung Association program. California applicants funded through the national research program will be considered for supplemental funding from the American Lung Association of California Research Program.
